CONSULTATION AND EXTENDED INFORMAL CONSULTATION ON MYANMAR

20 DECEMBER 2024

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan is undertaking a working visit to Bangkok, Thailand on 20 December 2024 to attend the ASEAN Troika Informal Consultation and Extended Informal Consultation Sessions.

The ASEAN Troika mechanism was established by ASEAN Leaders in 2023 to ensure continuity in ASEAN's work in handling the crisis in Myanmar. The Troika consists of the previous, current and incoming ASEAN Chairs. Currently, members of the Troika are Indonesia, Lao PDR and Malaysia.

The Informal Consultation aims to strengthen coordination and cooperation among the members of the ASEAN Troika in relation to the implementation of the Five-Points Consensus (5PC) and the ASEAN Leaders’ Review and Decision on the 5PC, towards achieving a peaceful and sustainable resolution in Myanmar.

For the Extended Informal Consultation, the ASEAN Troika will be joined by Foreign Ministers and representatives from other ASEAN Member States (AMS). The Extended Informal Consultation will focus on ASEAN’s overall efforts and the way forward in the implementation of the 5PC in addressing the crisis in Myanmar.

During these meetings, Malaysia will share the approach that it plans to undertake in addressing the conflict in Myanmar as the 2025 ASEAN Chair. The consultations will be chaired by the Foreign Minister of Lao PDR as the current Chair of ASEAN.

These consultations continue to highlight ASEAN’s pivotal role in addressing the crisis in Myanmar as well as ensuring regional peace and security.
