OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS TO THE ISLAMIC

REPUBLIC OF IRAN

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan will undertake an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 25 to 27 February 2025. This visit marks the Foreign Minister’s inaugural visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, underscoring Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in various sectors for the mutual benefit of both countries.

On 26 February 2025, the Foreign Minister will co-chair the 8 th Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) between Malaysia and the Islamic Republic of Iran with his counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. The JCM will discuss the scope and details of the areas of strategic cooperation between the two countries, covering a wide range of areas including politics, defence, security, trade and investment, banking and finance, agriculture, connectivity, energy, tourism and culture, science and technology, women and family issues, education, and the halal industry.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister is also scheduled to call on the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian. Their discussions will centre on Malaysia-Iran bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern, particularly the situation in Palestine and broader Middle Eastern affairs.

In 2024, the Islamic Republic of Iran was Malaysia's 7 th largest trading partner from the West Asian region, with total trade valued at RM2.6 billion (USD0.57 billion), an increase of 24.6 per cent from 2023. Malaysia was Iran’s largest trading partner among the ASEAN Member States and the 19th largest globally in 2023.
