OFFICIAL VISIT OF PRIME MINISTER DATO’ SERI ANWAR IBRAHIM TO AUSTRALIA AND PARTICIPATION IN THE 2 ND MALAYSIA-AUSTRALIA ANNUAL LEADERS’ MEETING AND ASEAN-AUSTRALIA SPECIAL SUMMIT 4 – 7 MARCH 2024
OFFICIAL VISIT OF PRIME MINISTER DATO’ SERI ANWAR IBRAHIM TO AUSTRALIA AND PARTICIPATION IN THE 2 ND MALAYSIA-AUSTRALIA ANNUAL LEADERS’ MEETING AND ASEAN-AUSTRALIA SPECIAL SUMMIT 4 – 7 MARCH 2024
Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake an Official Visit to Australia from 4 to 7 March 2024, at the invitation of his Australian counterpart, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr. Wan Ismail. The delegation will also include Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, as well as key Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials.
In his inaugural visit to Australia, the Prime Minister will lead the Malaysian delegation at the 2 nd Malaysia – Australia Annual Leaders’ Meeting (ALM), hosted by Australia on 4 March 2024 in Melbourne. He will also participate in the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit on 5 and 6 March 2024 in Melbourne.
During the ALM, both leaders will deliberate measures to advance the wide spectrum of cooperation underpinned by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework, including in trade and investment, education, digital economy and cybersecurity. A Leaders’ Joint Statement will also be issued after the meeting. Both leaders are also scheduled to witness the exchange of the following Memoranda of Understanding (MoU):
i. MoU on Co-operation in the Field of Higher Education, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Research;
ii. MoU on Co-operation in the Field of Youth and Sports;
iii. MoU on Co-operation in Cyber-security;
iv. Practical Arrangements between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Australia on Cooperation in the Areas of Science and Technology and their Applications for the Implementation of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
The ASEAN-Australia Special Summit is held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations. It marks a significant milestone in ASEAN-Australia relations, following the establishment of the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. ASEAN and Australia will review the current state of ASEAN-Australia cooperation and discuss enhancement of existing cooperation in various areas, including energy transition, human capital development, economic integration, connectivity and maritime cooperation.
The Leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern. The Special Summit is expected to adopt the ASEAN-Australia Leaders’ Vision Statement and the Melbourne Declaration as guiding documents to further advance the strategic direction of the ASEAN-Australia partnership.
While in Melbourne, the Prime Minister is scheduled to officiate the Al-Taqwa Sports Complex; have a Roundtable Meeting with captains of industry; one-to-one business meetings with potential investors; an interview with an international media organisation; and deliver a Keynote Address at Invest ASEAN Melbourne 2024. The Prime Minister will also host a dinner reception for the Malaysian diaspora in Melbourne.
During the Official Visit, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Governor General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), and deliver a public lecture at the Australia National University in Canberra.
Bound by robust economic partnerships and close people-to-people ties, Malaysia and Australia share a long-standing and close partnership. Malaysia’s participation at the ALM and the Special Summit reflects its strong commitment to further deepen the existing cooperation with Australia under the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, through bilateral and multilateral platforms.
