MALAYSIA EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT ON THE FAILURE OF THE

UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TO IMPOSE AN IMMEDIATE

HUMANITARIAN CEASEFIRE IN GAZA

On 20 February 2024, the United Nations Security Council came very close to adopting a unanimous decision on the Algerian-led resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.

Malaysia expresses her utmost disappointment that the Security Council, has yet again, failed to address the dire situation in the Gaza Strip. Regrettably, the resolution was vetoed, derailing global efforts to urgently address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Palestine.

As the situation in Gaza continues to worsen with Israel’s large-scale attacks in Rafah, there is no other plausible option than for the Security Council to call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

The only viable solution to the current situation is a two-State solution with the establishment of the State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Malaysia reiterates her call for the State of Palestine to be recognised as a full member of the United Nations.
