MALAYSIA DEPLOYS HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TEAM TO MYANMAR FOLLOWING REGIONAL EARTHQUAKES

MALAYSIA DEPLOYS HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TEAM TO MYANMAR FOLLOWING

REGIONAL EARTHQUAKES

In line with its ongoing commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian response, the Government of Malaysia, through the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), will deploy a 50-member Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) team to Yangon, Myanmar on Sunday, 30 March 2025. The deployment consists of one Contingent Commander and 49 rescue personnel to support ongoing humanitarian and disaster relief operations.

This consolidated deployment replaces the previously planned staggered dispatch of two separate teams, following the latest operational update from NADMA. By deploying the full team in a single coordinated mission, Malaysia aims to maximise the impact and efficiency of its assistance, ensuring that resources are allocated promptly to priority areas identified on the ground.

The decision to deploy assistance follows the recent earthquakes that struck central Myanmar, northern Thailand, and parts of southern China, resulting in tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a message shared on 28 March 2025, expressed deep concern over the scale of devastation and extended Malaysia’s heartfelt condolences and prayers to the victims and their families. He reaffirmed Malaysia’s solidarity with its ASEAN neighbours and stated that Malaysia stands ready to support ongoing humanitarian and recovery efforts.

Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan echoed this commitment, stressing that ASEAN stands ready to assist Myanmar and Thailand in their disaster response efforts, in accordance with the priorities set by both countries. He further outlined that ASEAN Member States will coordinate closely through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), to ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered in a timely, appropriate, and effective manner.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is facilitating all necessary visa and logistical arrangements for the NADMA mission. The Embassy of Malaysia in Yangon will support the team’s operations on the ground, including coordination with local authorities and humanitarian partners.

Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to regional cooperation and will continue to contribute meaningfully to humanitarian relief and disaster management efforts across ASEAN. In the spirit of shared responsibility, Malaysia stands with all affected communities during this period of recovery and resilience.
