57TH ASEAN FOREIGN MINISTERS’ MEETING (57TH AMM) AND RELATED MEETINGS 24 - 27 JULY 2024

 

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan will be leading Malaysia’s delegation to the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (57th AMM) and Related Meetings on 24 to 27 July 2024 in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

During this 57th AMM, the Foreign Minister is scheduled to participate in:

(i) ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting;

(ii) Meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission;

(iii) ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Interface Meeting with ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Representatives;

(iv)ASEAN Post Ministerial Conferences with the Dialogue Partners, namely, Australia, China, Canada, European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, and United States;

(v) 25th ASEAN Plus Three Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (APT FMM);

(vi)14th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (EAS FMM); and

(vii) 31st ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).

Malaysia is the country coordinator for ASEAN-Canada dialogue relations for 2021-2024. In this regard, the Foreign Minister and the Foreign Minister of Canada will co-chair the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference with Canada on 26 July 2024.

At the 57th AMM, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers are scheduled to discuss:

(i) the progress of ASEAN Community building;

(ii) ASEAN 2024 Priorities and Key Deliverables under the Chairmanship of Lao PDR;

(iii) follow-up to the ASEAN Leaders’ Review and Decision on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus;

(iv)ASEAN’s external relations and its centrality in the evolving regional architecture; and

(v) regional and international issues of common interest.

The Foreign Ministers will also discuss preparations for the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits, which are scheduled to be held in October 2024 in Lao PDR.

The 57th AMM and Related Meetings will present an opportunity for Malaysia to share and exchange views on issues of mutual interest, including but not limited to economic recovery efforts, maritime security, food security, climate change and energy transition.

Malaysia's participation in the 57th AMM and Related Meetings demonstrates its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia against the backdrop of prevailing security and socio-economic uncertainties. Malaysia’s participation in these meetings is also important as Malaysia prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.

At the conclusion of the 57th AMM and Related Meetings, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers are expected to adopt several outcome documents, including the Joint Communiqué of the 57th AMM, which will highlight the outcomes of discussions as well as strategic and important decisions made during the meetings.

In addition, the Foreign Minister is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts.

The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to hold a meet and greet session with the Malaysian diaspora in Vientiane.
