WORKING VISIT OF THE PRIME MINISTER TO THAILAND
17 APRIL 2025
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to Bangkok, Thailand on 17 April 2025 at the invitation of Prime Minister of Thailand Paetongtarn Shinawatra. This is the Prime Minister’s second visit to Bangkok since assuming office in November 2022, following his official visit on 9 and 10 February 2023.
During the visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to have a meeting with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Both leaders are expected to follow up on the outcomes of the 7 th Malaysia-Thailand Annual Consultation (AC) on 16 December 2024, held in Putrajaya.
Both leaders will also take stock of bilateral ties and explore further potential collaborative areas between the two close neighbours, as well as deliberate on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
While in Bangkok, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to have a meeting with the Informal Advisory Group to the ASEAN Chair as well as hold engagements with captains of industry in Thailand.
This visit serves as a continuity to the exchange of visits at the leaders’ level last year, in addition to the recent telephone conversation between the Prime Minister and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on 6 March 2025. These engagements reflect the longstanding camaraderie and close cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand as neighbouring countries and founding members of ASEAN.
In 2024, Thailand was Malaysia’s seventh-largest trading partner globally and third-largest among ASEAN Member States, with total trade amounting to USD25.03 billion (RM114.56 billion). Between January and February 2025, bilateral trade reached USD3.96 billion (RM17.65 billion), compared with USD3.67 billion (RM16.80 billion) for the corresponding period in 2024.
