The Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (78th UNGA) in New York, United States of America, from 20 to 24 September 2023.
YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by YABhg. Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Minister of Foreign Affairs YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir; Minister of Home Affairs YB Senator Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Minister of Health YB Dr. Zaliha Mustafa; as well as senior government officials.
This will be the first appearance by YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the United Nations General Assembly as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s National Statement at the General Debate on 22 September 2023. The theme for this year’s General Debate is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.”
The theme focuses on regaining momentum and accelerating action towards sustainable development. This calls on Member States to undertake coordinated action to rebuild international peace and security; incentivize bold and decisive leadership in the fight against climate change; and, bolster efforts to promote the full enjoyment of human rights and dignity by all.
In line with the theme of the 78th UNGA, YAB Prime Minister is expected to share Malaysia’s efforts in addressing climate change and actions towards achieving the 2030 Agenda. YAB Prime Minister is also expected to address Malaysia’s concern on global conflicts, such as the situation in Palestine and Myanmar.
While in New York, YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to have a Roundtable Meeting with Fortune 500 Companies; engagement session with Invest Malaysia New York; a forum with members of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR); and interviews with international media organisations such as Bloomberg and CNN.
Additionally, YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the 78th UNGA. The bilateral meetings will provide an opportunity for leaders to discuss various areas of cooperation, as well as exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. YAB Prime Minister will also host a dinner reception for the Malaysian diaspora in New York.
Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry is expected to participate in meetings and events involving various international and regional groupings and on thematic issues at the margins of the 78th UNGA. YB Foreign Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts to discuss various bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Other accompanying Cabinet Ministers are scheduled to have separate programmes during the 78th UNGA.
Malaysia’s active engagement during the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly underscores Malaysia’s commitment towards advancing issues that are important to the country at the multilateral level especially at the United Nations.
