WORKING VISIT OF THE FOREIGN MINISTER TO MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA 11-12 SEPTEMBER 2025
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan will undertake a working visit to Melbourne, Australia from 11 to 12 September 2025 to co-chair the 7 th Malaysia-Australia Annual Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AFMM) with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia Penny Wong.
AFMM serves as an important platform for both Foreign Ministers to review the progress of ongoing bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, higher and basic education, green economy, clean energy transition, critical minerals, Australia-Malaysia Institutional Strengthening Programme (AMIS), youth and sports, visa facilitation, defence, combating transnational crime and terrorism. Both Foreign Ministers will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concern, including Myanmar, the Cambodia-Thailand conflict, the South China Sea, and the situation in Gaza.
Both Foreign Ministers are also expected to discuss ASEAN-Australia dialogue relations, which were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021.
A Joint Statement will be issued following the Annual Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Governor of Victoria Margaret Gardner.
The working visit underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) with Australia, building on existing foundations of trust, mutual respect and shared aspirations.
Australia is an important economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, total bilateral trade amounted to RM82.92 billion, with exports valued at RM49.40 billion and imports at RM33.53 billion. For the period January and July 2025, Malaysia’s total trade with Australia stood at RM44.96 billion, with exports amounting to RM27.41 billion and imports totalling RM17.55 billion.
