COUNCIL AND THE HIGH-LEVEL SEGMENT OF THE CONFERENCE ON
DISARMAMENT IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Mohamad bin Alamin will lead the Malaysian Delegation to the High-Level Segment of the Human Rights Council and the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament, on 27-29 February 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Deputy Foreign Minister will deliver Malaysia’s National Statement at the Human Rights Council on 27 February 2024 (1830 Malaysia time) as well as at the Conference on Disarmament on 28 February 2024 (1600 Malaysia time). The Session at the Human Rights Council will be broadcast live via UN WebTV (https://webtv.un.org/en).
At the Human Rights Council, Malaysia will highlight the progress made in the promotion and protection of human rights. At the same time, Malaysia will make a strong representation in support of respect for the human rights of the Palestinian people, counter Islamophobia, highlight challenges posed by influx of refugees, improve working methods of the Human Rights Council and strengthen collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
At the Conference on Disarmament, Malaysia will focus on efforts for a world free of nuclear weapons and call upon Member States to swiftly agree on a Programme of Work for 2024 in order for the Conference to address the abolition of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
These two segments are among the main meetings in Geneva in 2024. The Deputy Foreign Minister’s participation is in line with Malaysia’s active role in international fora, particularly in promoting fundamental human rights for all and towards achieving universal peace and security.
The Deputy Foreign Minister is also expected to hold discussions with his counterparts and Heads of International Organisations in Geneva on issues of mutual interest. Among others, he is expected to exchange views to strengthen cooperation in human rights, humanitarian assistance, and in revitalising the work of Conference on Disarmament.
The Human Rights Council is a subsidiary body of the United Nations, comprising 47 Member States. The Council is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Malaysia is currently serving her third term in the Council which expires in December 2024. Since the Council was established in 2006, replacing the then Human Rights Commission, Malaysia has been a Council member in 2006-2009 and 2010-2013.
The Conference on Disarmament is the United Nations multilateral negotiating body on the issue of disarmament. It comprises 65 Member States including Malaysia.
