UPDATE ON INCIDENT AT HANEDA AIRPORT, TOKYO, JAPAN

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo, is closely monitoring developments in the aftermath of the incident at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, following the collision between a Japan Airlines plane (JAL 516) and a Japanese Coast Guard (JCG) aircraft on 2 January at 5.47 p.m. local time.
According to reports, all 379 passengers and crew members of flight JAL 516, including 8 children, were evacuated, with at least 17 people reported as injured. However, five out of six crew members from the JCG aircraft have been confirmed to have died.
Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the incident, as well as to the people and the Government of Japan.
The Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo is currently in contact with officials from Japan Airlines and the Japanese authorities to determine if any Malaysians were on board flight JAL 516, and will extend the necessary assistance.
