WORKING VISIT OF HIS MAJESTY SULTAN AND YANG DI-PERTUAN OF

NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM TO MALAYSIA

IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE 22^ND ANNUAL LEADERS’ CONSULTATION

BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

PUTRAJAYA, 5 MARCH 2019

Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be welcoming His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam to Putrajaya on 5 March 2019, in conjunction with the 22^nd Malaysia-Negara Brunei Darussalam Annual Leaders’ Consultation.

This year marks the first meeting between the Tun Dr Mahathir and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah under the Annual Leaders’ Consultation framework - the highest platform for discussion on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues of common concern. The two leaders exchanged visits in May and September last year, following the appointment of Tun Dr Mahathir as the 7^th Prime Minister of Malaysia. The 21^st Annual Leaders’ Consultation was held in Bandar Seri Begawan on 23 November 2017.

Special relationship between both countries are based on a common heritage and culture. Building on this special relationship, both leaders will take the opportunity of this important visit and annual meeting to appraise the progress of the on-going cooperation and explore new potentials for a more comprehensive partnership that can mutually benefit the peoples of the two countries.   

The Prime Minister and spouse, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali will also host a luncheon in honour of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam during the visit.

Trade between both countries totalled USD981.2 million in 2018. Malaysia is a major investor in Brunei from the ASEAN region, with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) amounting to USD486.74 million in 2017 or nearly 90.9% of total FDI (USD535.27 million) from fellow ASEAN Member States into Brunei.
