TYPHOON MANGKHUT IN HONG KONG, MACAU AND SOUTHERN CHINA

A super typhoon, known as Typhoon Mangkhut, has swept across Hong Kong, Macau and several areas in Southern China including Guangdong province on Sunday, 16 September 2018.

As of Monday morning, 17 September, four deaths were reported in Guangdong province while more than two hundred people were injured in Hong Kong and Macau. Approximately 2.4 million people had also been evacuated in Guangdong province. 

According to Hong Kong Observatory, Typhoon Mangkhut has gradually weakened. It is forecasted to move westward at 20 kilometres per hour towards Guizhou, Chongqing and Yunnan regions later in the day. Local authorities however have cautioned against the possibility of flooding due to heavy rain falls. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that thus far, no Malaysians have been reported injured as a result of the typhoon. 

As the situation remains fragile, all Malaysians are advised to defer non-essential travel to the affected areas for the time being. Those who are visiting or living in the affected areas are advised to remain indoors and continue to monitor the latest weather updates as well as safety advice from the local authorities.
