THE MERGING OF THE US CONSULATE GENERAL AND

US EMBASSY IN JERUSALEM ON 4 MARCH 2019

Malaysia strongly opposes the merging of the US Consulate General in Jerusalem with the Embassy there.

The move effective 4 March 2019 is the latest unfortunate step taken by the US against Palestine and its people. This called into question not only the US’ credibility as the mediator in the Palestine-Israel conflict but also its ultimate objective in the Middle East. Though the US justifies the merger as a means of bureaucratic efficiency, Malaysia views that it is nothing more than a smokescreen trying to camouflage what is essentially an opening of American embassy in Jerusalem; a move that will sound the death knell of the two-State solution that enjoys the support of the vast majority of the international community.

Malaysia wishes to reiterate its deeply held view that the best resolution to the ongoing conflict is through the two-State solution based on the pre-1967 borders of which the Palestinians and the Israelis live side by side in peace, with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

Malaysia will continue to oppose any action that will be detrimental to efforts to find a just and lasting peace to the conflict.
