OUTCOME OF THE WORKING VISIT OF THE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF
AUSTRALIA TO MALAYSIA

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia Penny Wong undertook a working visit to Malaysia from 3 to 4 December 2024.
On 4 December 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan and Minister Wong jointly chaired the 6 th Malaysia-Australia Annual Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Both Foreign Ministers reviewed the progress of the ongoing bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, particularly in trade and investment, energy transition, minerals, cybersecurity, digital economy, education, defence and security as well as people-to-people relations. The meeting was also a follow-up to the 2 nd Malaysia-Australia Annual Leaders’ Meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne in March.
Both Foreign Ministers also discussed and exchanged views on regional and international issues, including the situations in Myanmar and the Middle East, as well as the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
In the course of the meeting, Minister Wong expressed Australia’s support for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. As ASEAN’s very first dialogue partner, Australia has continued to engage and embark on a wide range of cooperation across the three ASEAN Community pillars.
A Joint Statement was issued following the meeting.
Minister Wong also paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, where both sides reviewed the progress of cooperation agreed following the latter’s visit to Australia. The Prime Minister also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to attend the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Malaysia in 2025.
Minister Wong also held a bilateral talk with Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad to discuss cooperation in the critical minerals industry.
Overall, this visit has further strengthened the existing cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2021 through robust economic partnerships and enduring people-to-people ties.
