MALAYSIA’S HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TO SYRIA
The Special Recce Team to Damascus led by the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, YBhg. Dato' Norman Muhamad and accompanied by 20 members comprising representatives from the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) as well as representatives of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) and MERCY Malaysia, left for Syria on 14 February 2023. The team is expected to arrive in Damascus from Beirut by land this evening.
The above visit is essential to assess the current situation on the ground and identify critical needs for the earthquake victims. The Recce Team will establish close contact with the local authorities and identify safe routes for humanitarian assistance missions from Malaysia. The temporary closure of the Malaysian Embassy in Syria due to conflict in 2011 hampered early efforts to render humanitarian assistance to Syria. As most of the affected areas are in a high-risk conflict zone, the humanitarian mission must be coordinated thoroughly.
Two (2) Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF)’s A400M aircraft are on standby to fly for Damascus International Airport to dispatch humanitarian aid on Saturday, 18 February 2023.
