INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP AT THE HEART OF MALAYSIA’S HUMANITARIAN AND
PEACE EFFORTS FOR GAZA
Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan led the Malaysian Delegation to the High-Level Conference “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza”, held at the King Hussein bin Talal Convention Centre, Dead Sea, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on 11 June 2024.
The High-Level Conference was co-organised by Jordan, Egypt and the United Nations, to galvanise international humanitarian support for Gaza. A total of 75 representatives comprising of Heads of State/ Government and Ministers, United Nations Agencies, International Organisations and key stakeholders, participated in the Conference.
During the Conference, the Foreign Minister welcomed the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 2735(2024), which among others, calls for an immediate, full and complete ceasefire, as well as the safe and effective distribution of humanitarian assistance at scale throughout the Gaza Strip. The Foreign Minister, reiterated for the root causes of the conflict to be addressed; for Israel to be held accountable for the atrocities inflicted on the Palestinians and to reinforce the UN’s role in carrying out its humanitarian mandate.
The Foreign Minister also took the opportunity to meet and discuss bilateral issues at the sidelines of the Conference. During the meeting with the US Secretary of State, H.E. Antony Blinken, both Ministers concurred that a ceasefire is imperative for any humanitarian response in Gaza to be effective. They also spoke on ASEAN, with the US expressing support for ASEAN’s Centrality. H.E. Blinken also appreciated Malaysia’s support to the US’ Resolution which was adopted by the UNSC on 10 June 2024.
In addition, the Foreign Minister lauded Spain’s recognition of Palestine’s Statehood during his meeting with his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares Bueno. During his meeting with the Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, both Ministers discussed the urgency of channelling unhindered humanitarian aid into Gaza.
During his visit, the Foreign Minister also handed over contribution amounting to USD500 thousand respectively, to the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) and the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC), through the Humanitarian Trust Fund for Palestine (Akaun Amanah Kemanusiaan Rakyat Palestin - AAKRP). Malaysia has been collaborating with JHCO in providing food, medicine and essential supplies, necessary for the survival and well-being of Gazans, while the KHCC provides free treatment and care to Palestinians suffering from cancer.
The Foreign Minister’s Working Visit attests to Malaysia’s undivided support to the Palestinian cause, both at the bilateral and multilateral fora. The visit provided an important avenue for Malaysia to continue and intensify her diplomatic engagements, for an immediate, full and complete ceasefire and end of hostilities in Gaza.
