EARTHQUAKE IN NORTHWESTERN IRAN
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, through its Embassy in Tehran, is monitoring closely developments in the aftermath of the 5.9-magnitude earthquake that hit northwestern Iran near the city of Khoy (780 kilometres north of Tehran) on 28 January 2023. It was reported that at least three people were killed and more than 800 others were injured.
Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the earthquake, as well as to the Government and the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to the Embassy of Malaysia in Tehran, no Malaysians were reportedly affected by the earthquake.
As aftershocks are expected, Malaysians in Iran are advised to remain vigilant and to follow the latest updates and advisories issued by the local authorities.
