EARTHQUAKE IN GANSU AND QINGHAI, CHINA
On 18 December 2023 at 11.59 pm, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck China’s North-West of Gansu and Qinghai Provinces. Approximately 105 fatalities and 397 casualties were reported in Gansu, while 11 people were killed in Qinghai thus far according to the local authority. More than 4,700 houses are damaged, with some villages facing disruption to power and water supplies, along with transportation and communication.
Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the earthquake, as well as to the people and the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
In the present time, no Malaysian has been reported to be involved or affected by the earthquake. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, through the Consulate General of Malaysia in Xi’an will continue monitoring developments closely. Malaysians in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow the latest updates and advice issued by the local authorities.
